Yeimy Rivera – RUA Program & Community Engagement Board Alum, Harvard

Tell us about yourself. What do you study? What do you do outside of research?

I am a solar physicist at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian working on examining the heating and acceleration processes of the solar wind and coronal mass ejections. Outside of research, I spend time hiking and running, as well as exploring new restaurants/cuisines around Boston.

How did you first get involved with RUA?

I first became connected through RUA through the research exchange program where, as a University of Michigan graduate student, visited Harvard University. After graduation, I became involved in RUA as part of the Community Engagement Board.

You’re finishing your term on the RUA Community Engagement Board. Why did you decide to join the board?

I decided to join the Community Engagement Board as means of giving back to the community that provided me with resources that advanced my career. As part of the board, I hoped to help others find resources to take the next step in their own scientific career, as well as make meaningful connections with others in the community.

What has been a highlight of your time with RUA?

The highlight of my time in RUA is that it has connected me to other scientists across the partnered institutions that have become role models and mentors to me. This was crucial as a newly minted PhD that was trying to figure out how to navigate the next step in my career.

You’ve been at 2 different RUA institutions thus far. Do you have plans to stay within our alliance? Do you know what you’ll be doing when you finish up your postdoc?

I do plan to keep in touch with the RUA community in any way I can. This year, I finished my postdoc and have recently transitioned to a permanent position at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. In my new position, I will be working as a research scientist with the solar physics group and continuing to mentor students.

What words of wisdom do you have for someone considering participating in RUA?

To anyone considering becoming a part of RUA, do it! It has been such a joy attending RUA conferences and making scientific connections, as well as experiencing/having the opportunity to collaborate and build connections with other research groups through the research exchange program.
